Appletree

Nestled in the Greenbelt of the Peak District, Appletree focuses on remodifying an existing single storey bungalow to create two unique dwellings. The project seeks to bring three generations of family back to the area across two separate dwellings.
The composition of the rear facade has been designed to capture key views across the Greenbelt.
The building form pays respect to the existing position of the property on site and retains the majority of the existing bungalow structure.

Two first floor additions are added to either side; separating the property into two distinctive homes. Their orientation are governed by the existing massing on site to create a dynamic building form which celebrate different views across the surrounding landscape.

Between the two properties, communal terraces separate the two dwellings and allows light to enter key social/ family spaces on the ground floor.

The material palette for the property draws upon the local vernacular and client aspirations. The massing appears as two stone forms sitting on a rendered plinth, creating a strong contrast between existing and new additions.

Utilising the stone building forms allow vaulted ceilings to all first floor rooms, whilst keeping the eaves height to an acceptable height for planning constraints.

Window reveals and external ironmongery seek to further enhance the rich palette of materials, adding tones of brass and bronze to the scheme.

"Appletree celebrates the coming together of three generations of family after what has been a difficult time for us all in 2020. It was important to create two separate dwellings, which look coherent yet capture two contrasting stages of life of the family."
