Appletree 2.0

A bespoke new build family home set in a challenging tiered landscaped on the edge of the Peak District. Taking inspiration from the local vernacular of rural barns and country homes for open pasture contexts, the proposal replaces an existing bungalow on-site.

Diagram - Site Analysis and Context

The building form is split between two distinct 'wings' separated by a grand staircase. An open plan family space utilises key views across the site, whilst a snug, office and laundry room hugs the boundary adjacent to the neighbouring property.

The 'wings' are stepped in plan to provide morning and evening terraces, carefully positioned to respond to the sun path across the site.

The external envelope is traditional in form with high quality materials combined to form a minimal and controlled palette. The external walls consist of local dry stone walling with open joints and a honed / hammered finish.

A black slate wing denotes the master bedroom, whilst breaking up the part two-three storey form to the side.

Throughout the house, free standing internal partitions physically separate individual functions throughout whilst providing glimpses and views to multiple areas of the house. Stone cladding continues into the house to enhance the connection between inside and out.

The master wing, utilises a different architectural concept, with large ample glazing to both sides to enhance and capture key views across the tree line to the south and a view towards the "church on the hill" to the north.

Timber open slats are used to control solar gain and enhance privacy in these areas.
