Threaphurst Barns

Located within Stockport's Green Belt on Threaphurst Lane in Hazel Grove, the scheme comprises an extension to the ground floor with additional alteration works to the primary suite on the first floor. The family home was part-built by the client’s father so carried a certain sentimentality which required a sensitive approach to ensure additions added-to rather than replaced.
The design was led by opening up the rear of the house to bring in more light and create a sense of airiness in the previously dark and low-ceiling north-facing part of the house. A glazed link and roof lights alongside corner glazing/sliding doors maximised solar gain from the east side as well as views out to the garden.
Opening up of adjacent living spaces, connected with an infill extension to create an open plan family kitchen/dining/living space that can be adapted to suit a range of uses. Bespoke joinery partitions the space, the living area can be shut off with a fold out desk to create a day-time workspace and provides display shelving for the dining room on the other side.
Timber panels reference the agricultural nature of the dwelling site being a farm with associated outbuildings that have timber stable doors. The cladding intentionally contrasts the existing dwelling to celebrate the contemporary addition but takes the sloping angle of existing roofline to echo the front porch and integrate the corner infill in the overall massing.
In addition to the works on the ground floor, the re-configuration of the master bedroom suite has also been developed. The scheme looked to re-work the existing layout to improve storage and usability of the space, whilst focusing on framing key views across the site.
